Have you ever tried to play with someone else’s toy and have them grab it from your hands and say, “That’s mine?” I’m going to guess, yes. But if my memory serves me, I was the one who actually said it.
You see, we are all born selfish, wanting what is ours, and if truth can be told, it does not always change with age.
But as children of God, it is supposed to. We are to live a different life, a life that is countercultural. A life that is…
First, SELF-LESS.
Living a selfless life will not happen naturally; it comes supernaturally. It comes from God. When we start to really experience God’s love, in such a real way, it motivates us and moves us to love others the same – selfless.
This is why we need to read the Bible and fill our minds with His thoughts, His ways, His truth about life and living. “Don’t be selfish… Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves” (Phil. 2:3).
Second, SELF-LAST.
To get ahead in life is to walk behind and serve first. Jesus said the FIRST shall be last and the last shall be first. I heard it said that a big person is a person who makes you feel bigger when you are around them.
How can we help someone else get ahead? How can we see their needs before ours?
Finally, SELF-LOST.
To die to one’s self, is the fullness to live the life God wants for us. When we finally stop trusting our ways, our thoughts, and completely yield to His, it is then that we start to understand what it means to live like Christ. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2:20).
