What is the greatest news you have ever received? Your wife telling you she is with child? Your dream job finally coming to fruition? Your child, who had been abroad for whatever reason, returning home? Graduating college? Winning the lottery? An angel declaring, “This is good news of great joy… a Savior has been born?”
I fear that the latter is one that does not matter.
You see, the angel’s announcement should not have come as a surprise. The Jewish world had been waiting. Their religion had been foretelling. And now, the time had arrived – and they completely missed it. How? Why? And just maybe, we are doing the same? For if we are not careful, the good news can be missed once again.
Please allow me to offer two possible reasons. One, we do not see the need. We live in a country of abundance. And it is hard to paint a picture of need when we have more than we can fathom.
How do you help someone see their need of Christ when they do not even see themselves in a crisis?
Secondly, I wonder if it could be fear – fear of the unknown, especially in our world today. There is so much unknown right now, and that fear is a big deal. But please consider, though much is unknown to us, nothing is unknown to God. And God ALWAYS has His best interest in heart. He will not, and cannot fail. Whatever you may give up, I guarantee you will gain so much more in Jesus.
