This is a time of reassessing and revisiting the ‘why’ we believe in church multiplication.
A fresh wind is so needed, embracing reproduction and sending forth leaders, multipliers, into His harvest. Consider the instruction, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord… to send out” (Matthew 9:37-38). What does it mean to pray ‘earnestly’? I believe it is to pray in such a way that we are willing to take our hands off anything and everything for the sake of His Kingdom.
You see, this ‘harvest’ is the opportunity for God to change people’s hearts, from being self-centered to being worshipers of God. It is ‘plentiful’ because we are in a time where so many are searching for THE truth and not finding it among the institutional and sociological norms of our day. These ‘laborers’ are referring to us, His followers, who are to be sent out, not just ‘sit within’. And as we compare to the number of people – the hundreds of thousands in our sphere of influence – it seems very few are embracing His great commission – to GO (the first two letters of the word GOSPEL).
An understanding, that numerical growth, WITHOUT a balanced emphasis on healthy reproduction, will produce an elusive and never satisfying form of idolatry.
I believe we are in a time of GREAT opportunity. To ruthlessly and passionately invest in those who are coming, and instilling in them this call before us – believing in them, trusting in God, and sending them out.
My friends, a faith that finds God in the past boasts roots, but a faith that finds God in the future bears much fruit – that’s why He called it a ‘harvest’.
