As I met with a gentleman the other day, I was reminded about what really contributes to a healthy marriage, or a marriage that fires on all cylinders. And it really comes down to this truth: You will never get everything you want. And it’s good to be reminded of this often because for a marriage to be healthy, each person needs to be willing to sacrifice something for the other person. There have been so many times where I’ve gotten frustrated because I was focusing on my needs rather than Karen’s needs. That’s a dangerous place to be, as I’ve learned! But, when I focus more on her needs rather than my own, somehow my own needs tend to take more of a backseat (well, I think God actually has a hand in that, too).

One of my favorite scripture verses is Romans 12:1, which says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” When we choose to make sacrifices for others, God smiles. Those around us smile. And, in an interesting turn of events, the more we learn to serve and sacrifice for our spouse, our wants can actually change, thus giving us everything we want!

So maybe for this week, what things might you be able to sacrifice in order to value your spouse? Do you know what your spouse would appreciate? If not, what a great opportunity for conversation.
