Insider Information for LIFE Group Hosts

God calls us to be the hands and feet of Christ. Below are some serving opportunities that your LIFE group can be a part of. Check back often as we will continue to post new opportunities here.

One-Time Serving Opportunities

Park Clean-up

Volunteer groups are needed on Friday, April 5th from 2pm – 4pm and Saturday, April 6th from 9am – 11am to help clean up some of the City Parks that were affected by the recent flooding. Volunteers need to be 13 years of age or older. Each park is limited to 12 volunteers and we would prefer full groups of 12 to sign up together if possible. To sign up a group, please click here.

Sandbag Clean-up

As we move towards flood clean up, we are in need of volunteers who can remove sandbags from homes and dispose of them. The City has opened three sandbag collection locations for disposal of sandbags at Riverdale Park parking lot, Tomar Park parking lot, and Sherman Park parking lot. Hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Saturday, April 13. If you are interested in helping remove sandbags, please check here to sign up.

"Let Me Run" Terry Redlin After School Program

“Let Me Run” is an after-school program for boys in the 4th and 5th grades, that happens March 11th through May 4th.  Volunteers during this 7-week program meet with the boys twice per week for 1.25 hours (3:00-4:15pm).

During our sessions, our coaches work through easy to follow curriculum given by the Embe office.  We begin with a workout and stretches, and then we gather them for a brief lesson that involves more discussion/input from the boys.

Since the same boys come weekly, this is a great opportunity to invest in the life of a student who needs and wants a leader in their life.

Those interested can call Jennifer Swenson on her direct line:605.681.8329.

It is a fun, thought-provoking  and deeply moving global “treasure hunt” like nothing in the world. The message of wonder and grace are key to unlocking the hidden treasure!!

Ongoing Serving Opportunities

Mentors Needed at Terry Redlin

The staff at Terry Redlin has let us know that there are still students who are waiting for someone to mentor them. Those interested in changing a child’s life and being a great source of encouragement as a mentor begin by filling out the application on Lutheran Social Services website. Follow this link for more information.

Celebrate Church Prison Ministry Opportunity

Celebrate Freedom, our own Prison Ministry, has been given the opportunity to work with Volunteers of America at their Summit Heights apartments in downtown Sioux Falls.  Our plan is to use the community room for a Saturday afternoon lunch of soup and sandwiches. This will help us build relationships, offer a brief spiritual program and eventually invite and transport them to 5pm Saturday service at Celebrate.

Two things are needed to accomplish this:

  1. Life Groups that will provide and serve a meal on Saturdays.  The more Life Groups involved, the less times they will serve.  Ideally we are hoping for ten Life Groups that will serve on a rotating basis.
  2. Sponsor and purchase Bibles (approximately $4-5 each) to be given to those that need them.  Any Life Group can take part in this.

If interested, please contact Al Neis (605)940-3777 or Rich Roste (605)359-2541. Thank you!

Serving Sunday Lunch at St. Francis House

St Francis house lacks volunteers to serve lunch on Sundays. Three people are needed every Sunday, from 11:45am to 12:30pm. It’s as easy as scooping food on a plate, along with a smile. If interested, contact Jodi Erickson at (605)321-9533.

Adopt a Sidewalk for the Elderly in Sioux Falls

The Active Generations Workers on Wheels “Adopt a Sidewalk” program is in need of volunteers to help the vulnerable, elderly homeowners in our community with their snow removal needs this snow season!  We currently have over 140 people on the list, and than 20 volunteers available to assist them so far!

Those willing to help would be assigned a homeowner (or two or three) within their requested zip code if possible.  (Most of the need is in the central part of Sioux Falls.)  This can be a volunteer opportunity for a single person, a family or even a team of volunteers to share throughout the season.

Please feel free to have potential volunteers contact Anne Young at WOW 333-3317.
